I always level my frames by eye, but even then some pictures still end up slightly crooked. My trick is to use a small bubble level, or even just the spirit level app on my phone, to check both the top and bottom edges before marking the nail position. A quick check after hammering often saves me from seeing that annoying tilt on the wall.
